We are searching for emerging artists from all over Canada. Help us plan a 2010 conference so we can keep creating, keep doing our work and maybe stop b*tiching just a little. This is a conference for you, organized by emerging artists, supported by b current.

What do you need as an emerging artist? What would you want out of a conference? Now is your chance to have your say AND present your work.

We are accepting applications for:

-Emerging Artists to present their work at our raw materialz performance showcase on Friday, August 21, 2009. We are accepting proposals until August 9, 2009.

-Emerging Artists to attend an all day planning conference on Saturday, August 22, 2009. Cost $10, lunch provided. Rub shoulders with other emerging artists and input to what 2010 conference will look like. Conference will be followed by b current’s season wrap bbq.

Finance/Admin Coordinator

Nia is a community space focused on supporting the personal development of individuals of African decent in Toronto, Canada. We use arts, culture and education as tools to support young people in being positive, productive, and purposeful individuals with strong personal identity and awareness.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (critical resource sustainability planner)

• Support in execution Nia’s organizational goals
• Support director and Nia staff in fulfilling job requirements
• Coordinate schedules, appointments
• Administrative, financial and budgetary support of Nia, Nia core programs and in future Nia’s community partners
• Develop, create, organize and update budgets related to Nia, Nia programming and partnerships
• Develop, create, organize and update filing systems
• Ensuring reports go into funders and board of directors
• Support in board development, growth and efficiency
• Support in sustainability planning (core, programmatic, administrative)
• Fundraising initiatives both traditional and innovative (write grants, coordinate fundraising events, fundraisers, web-based etc).
• Resource development via researching and targeting charitable trusts and/or rotary clubs criteria match the charity's projects and activities
• Develop and execute a resource management strategy
• Building profitable, long-term funding and fundraising relationships with donors and potential donors
• Managing donor database
• Writing applications, letters and promotional materials for a range of potential and current donors
• Risk analysis and balancing time-cost ratios to prioritize fundraising activities with the highest chance of success
• Monitoring income and expenditure against budgets and the targets

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Proven history of effective work in community and solid understanding of administration, fundraising principles
• Understanding of issues facing Afro-Canadian young people in underserved neighbourhoods
• Highly organized and detail oriented, research and analytical skills
• Ethno-cultural experience reflective of the Nia community
• Knowledge, skills and the ability to develop and promote anti-oppressive frameworks and culture
• Prior knowledge of Nia initiative is an asset
• Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, keyboarding and technical skills in an MS Office environment including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• Excellent client service skills, ability to work effectively with external stakeholders and proven ability to work effectively in a team
• Detail oriented with proven capacity for initiative and ability to carry out projects with minimum supervision
• Good judgment with the ability to act tactfully and diplomatically

• Interest in mentorship (giving and receiving), continuous learning and interest in sharing knowledge and experience with other young people

• Interest and knowledge of artistic trends relevant to young people of African diaspora ages 12-26

For over 30 years The Rhubarb Festival has offered Toronto artists a critic-free environment to experiment with new theatrical explorations. First produced by Buddies in 1979, Rhubarb is more than a festival; it is a commentary on theatre - on how we create it, on how we present it, and on how we experience it. Here we allow the artist and the idea to be the centre of attention. The trappings of traditional theatre are purged in favour of a stripped-down approach, where inspiration and invention are genesis. Rhubarb encourages established artists to take new risks and emerging artists to explore the medium of performance creation in a safe, inspired space. Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is currently seeking submissions of new, original, contemporary theatre, performance and dance for our 31^st Rhubarb Festival.

The Rhubarb Festival has acted as a seeding ground for exciting new work from a host of groundbreaking Canadian artists, including Sky Gilbert, Daniel MacIvor, Daniel Brooks, Guillermo Verdecchia, Don McKellar, Diane Flacks, Gavin Crawford, Sonja Mills, Darren O’Donnell, Damien Atkins, Atom Egoyan, Jacob Wren, Ann-Marie MacDonald (and many more). The Toronto Star has called it an “annual tonic of fresh and exciting theatre that invigorates Toronto”.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

Submissions delivered by or post-marked up to July 31, 2009 will be accepted

Proposed performances may be no longer than 25 minutes in length

Works submitted must be new, never previously produced and original

Submissions must submitted in hard copy only and must be accompanied by and 2009 Rhubarb Festival Application Form (available online at www.artsexy.ca )

Fax or email submissions will not be accepted

late submissions may not be considered
